Many animals can become frightened by the noise and commotion of fireworks. Here’s a list of safety tips to keep your pets safe on 4th of July!
- Ensure that all pets remain indoors in a secure, safe, and enclosed area where they cannot harm themselves. Consider turning on the TV or radio to help mask the sound of fireworks, or play calming music.
- Spend quality time with your pets, providing their favorite toys, beds, food, and water to create a soothing atmosphere.
- Keep your anxious pets engaged by playing with them or involving them in enjoyable activities to help distract them from their nerves.
- It may seem counterintuitive, but avoid petting or reassuring your cat or dog when they are anxious or scared. This behavior can unintentionally reinforce their fear and increase their anxiety.
- Animal shelters see a significant rise in strays during this holiday. Pets may panic and escape through doors, windows, or other openings to escape the noise. It is vital that all pets have some form of current identification.
- Never leave pets unattended outside. Even dogs that are tied up can injure themselves while trying to escape by chewing or choking on their leashes. If you must take your pet outside, ensure they are secured with a sturdy leash or in a carrier.
Plan ahead for your pet’s needs. Don’t wait until the last minute to obtain medication from your veterinarian, as many require a physical exam within six months prior to prescribing tranquilizers.
