Australian Shepherds are an American stock dog initially bred to herd Australian sheep. Like their fellow sheepdogs, Aussies are active, working dogs that are as loyal as they are intelligent. Like many other canines, they come in a range of sizes from “mini-Aussie” (North American Shepherd, per AKC) to “Aussie” (Australian Shepherd per AKC). Sadly, these loyal, hardworking dogs are predisposed to similar ailments as other shepherd breeds, such as hip dysplasia, vision issues, epilepsy, and cancer.

Fortunately, such issues can be alleviated by instilling healthy habits early on. And one of the most important habits to start with is ensuring that your dog has a balanced and nutritious diet. Feeding your Australian Shepherd the right food is the first step to making sure he or she has all of the nutrients they need to thrive.

Key Nutritional Considerations
For Australian Shepherds

Allergies

Food allergies are not an uncommon occurrence. Typically, some Aussies may have issues with beef, dairy, and eggs. So, if you notice your dog reacting or you simply want to avoid any issues, it’s highly recommended that you put your pup on a limited ingredient diet.

Digestion

One of the most noticeable signs of food allergies is digestion issues. This could be exhibited as anything from nausea, to low energy levels, to anorexia. If you do see such digestive issues, consider limiting your dog’s diet regimen to simple foods or limited ingredient dog foods.

Skin Condition

The most visible symptoms of an allergic food reaction are skin issues such as dry and flaky skin and/or rashes. In such cases, a switch to a limited ingredient dog food will usually clear up any such issues immediately.

Personality and Temperament

Australian Shepherds are active dogs that need regular exercise and a high caloric intake in order to fuel their high energy levels. However they are just as happy to be a couch potato with their human. They make for incredible companions and protectors that love work as much as they do play. This makes them particularly suited to a family that needs a working dog or intend to be very active and outdoorsy.

Common behavioral traits include:

  • Trainable
  • Intelligent
  • Alert
  • Nimble
  • Animated
  • Robust

Activities and Exercise

Aussies are high-energy dogs that need to have plenty of time to roam, play, and run. This is not a breed that will be satisfied with one walk a day, or being cooped up all day. Ideally, your Australian Shepherd needs the following daily activity:

  • 30 minutes of walk
  • 30 minutes of off leash running and playing
  • 30 minutes of training, such as agility, obedience, frisbee, and tracking

Common Health Issues

Compared to many other medium-sized dog breeds, Aussies are long-lived and generally healthy. Fortunately, they tend to not suffer from many of the common skin, bone, and fur issues that other similar breeds do. That said, common health issues include:

  • Auto immune
  • Cancer and tumors
  • Cataracts
  • Collie eye anomaly (CEA)
  • Colobomas
  • Epilepsy
  • Hip and dysplasia

Happy Aussies

“My mini aussie Dexter suffered from terrible skin allergies. I wasn’t sure what was causing them, but after researching different causes and foods, I decided to make a diet change. I picked Lucy because it was science backed and limited ingredient options. Since removing Dexter from a chicken food, his skin has FULLY healed. No more itching, no bald spots, just a happy and healthy pup. I HIGHLY recommend Lucy if you have an aussie with allergies!”
